The Fed Pennies are a three-piece alternative rock band. Jake Smith (lead
guitar/vocals), John Matthews (Bass) and Tom Spence (drums) hail from Nova
Scotia where they grew up together, learned to play music together, and have
together dedicated themselves to the creation of a musical style that is all
their own.
This eclectic group has been breaking through the independent music scene since
their 2004 inception. Founders Jacob Smith and Aaron Farr, previous ECMA winners
with Halifax international touring group, The Jimmy Swift Band, decided it was
time to branch off on their own in order to explore another musical direction.
With that in mind a new definitive alternative rock sound was born. Their genre
of music falls between several sub-genres of alt rock, influences coming from
their experiences playing with many diverse bands. In their music you can hear a
fusion of Britpop, electronic, hard rock, punk and surf; in fact their style is
as varied as they themselves are. By seeing one their live shows you will be
treated to a high energy performance where you can treat you ears to some great
music.
“…The Fed Pennies have a very different vibe with distorted vocals and catchy
chords. I would love to check this band out live and see what an audience does.
Good solid songs.”… Famous Music Publishing UK
To date The Fed Pennies have released a self-titled album (2004), a live and
rarities collection (2006), and most recently their second full-length album
“Brain Disaster” (2008). Continuous industry and major fan support has
catapulted the bands success in late 2007 and early 2008. As a result, the band
was handed an opportunity of major proportion for an East Coast rock band. The
band was chosen to open for Ozzy Osbourne in Halifax during his 40-city massive
'Black Rain' North American tour. The band received major attention due to the
massive amount of publicity and it couldn’t have come at a better time, the band
has been preparing for the official release of “Brain Disaster”, taking place
late February of 2008.
“Buzzing In My Head” the newest single to be released from “Brain Disaster” and
has got lots of airplay, eventually reaching #1 on Q104fm in Halifax. “To Your
Senses”, the first single from their self-titled album brought the Fed Pennies
to the forefront of local music scene, and it reached number 7 on the
internationally syndicated radio show East Coast Countdown.
During the past three years the band has showcased at the Juno’s, the ECMA’s and
Canada Music Week. They have also released three independently shot music videos
. They have also signed with L.A based music publisher Seth Berg of South Bay
Music Group (2007).
